The NRI is a non-profit corporation devoted to issues of the public mental health system. Established in 1987 as a national organization resource to provide leadership and support in the areas of analysis, evaluation, and research, NRI facilitates the application of research findings to management of state mental health programs.

The NRI is designed to compile data and conduct research activities on various aspects of state mental health system financing, staffing, clinical services, and interactions with other public service systems. Research products are made available to state policy makers and managers and the public who can use the research findings to implement more effective mental health programs and policies in their states.
