NRI is providing SMHAs with direct access to years of NRI data on State Mental Health System

Thursday, April 3, 2025

Guided by a state advisory group, NRI is developing data visualizations using State Profiles and other publicly available data on its State Profiles Restricted Access Website (www.nri-inc.org/profiles).  On this site, SMHA and NASMHPD staff can access state-level NRI data about:

  1. State Mental Health Agency Expenditures for Mental Health:  Over 30 years of data on SMHA-controlled expenditures for state psychiatric hospitals, Community Mental Health Services, and Total SMHA expenditures.  States can view data for all states or select states for comparison and can look at data by year or over time.
  2. Behavioral Health Crisis Services:  Detailed information about Crisis Contact Centers (988 and Other Contact Centers), Mobile Crisis Teams, and Crisis Stabilization Services.  Information about the number of programs, number of individuals served, funding levels, service models being used, state-wide/24/7 access initiatives, and more are available for 2023 and will soon have 2024-2025 data added.
  3. Use of State Psychiatric Hospitals:  including information about the number of state hospitals operated, number of clients served (admissions and residents), special populations served, forensic client information, and funding are available.

In addition, NRI is currently working with the NASMHPD Finance and Policy Division to develop new Visualizations that focus on Medicaid and other funding sources paying for mental health services. The new visualization will include information about trends in financing SMHA services, as well as Medicaid information such as Medicaid Expansion, use of Managed Care, Use of Medicaid waivers and options to support mental health services, and information on total Medicaid spending and enrollment.

The State Profiles Restricted Access site is available to State Mental Health Agency Staff.   NRI will be holding a free webinar for states that will demonstrate the available data.  Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions or would like to be included in the announcement for the upcoming webinar.
